Gabriel Prokofiev’s Nonclassical club night featured a multi-tracked ‘cello with eight loudspeakers, a violin/electronics duet and plenty more

As the grandson of the great Sergei Prokofiev, you might expect Gabriel Prokofiev to be something of an envelope-pusher. So, when he and his Nonclassical club night took over a Bermondsey warehouse last Friday to showcase the best in modern composition and performance techniques, it was no surprise.

The night, which aims to promote new works and composers in unexpected locations, took place in a disused biscuit factory in Bermondsey. Works included OUR by Aisha Orazbayeva and Peter Zinovieff (a piece for violin and computer) and Traces VII by Martin Matalon.

The centrepiece, though, was undoubtedly cellist Peter Gregson performing Gabriel Prokofiev’s own Cello Multitracks with the help of eight independent loudspeakers, and a rendition of Steve Reich’s Cello Counterpoint. All that was followed by a DJ set from Prokofiev himself, as well as several other works from modern composers.
